Grand Seiko 57GS 43999 Self-Dater 1965 Nov Chronometer Cal. 5722A Gold Lion
An exceptional example of the iconic Grand Seiko 43999 "Self-Dater" (57GS), manufactured in November 1965. This second-generation Grand Seiko is one of the most historically significant timepieces in Japanese watchmaking history, introducing the legendary "Grammar of Design" ethos that defines the brand to this day.
This particular example beautifully balances top-tier mechanical health with authentic, unrestored vintage character.
Condition Report:
Dial: 100% original and untouched silver sunburst Applique Dial (AD variant) with hand-finished rhodium-plated indices. In step with its age, the dial displays light vintage patina alongside some moisture spotting, primarily visible around the outer perimeter and near the hand stack. This natural aging has been left entirely alone, providing definitive proof to pure collectors that the dial is original and has never been redialed or artificially touched up.
Case: Excellent vintage condition. The legendary Zaratsu-polished case edges remain crisp and sharp, showcasing its original, blocky architectural geometry. The steel shows light hairline scratches from careful wear over the decades but remains beautifully unpolished.
Crown: Equipped with its rare, authentic factory "W Seiko" signed coarse-knurled crown. The quickset date mechanism and winding engagement operate flawlessly.
Caseback: Features the highly coveted original 18k Solid Gold Lion Medallion. The internal stippling, stars, and lettering are incredibly crisp, showing almost zero wear or flattening from skin contact.
Inner Caseback: Retains its original factory perlage finishing and historical Japanese watchmaker service markings hand-inked in 1997.
Mechanical Performance:The manual-wind Caliber 5722A movement is clean and running beautifully. On a professional timegrapher, it registers a phenomenal +6 to +8 seconds per day with a robust amplitude averaging ~280° and a tight beat error of 0.6ms. This strong amplitude and stable rate indicate clean pivots, healthy gear teeth, and excellent mainspring power delivery.
Included: Watch head paired with a premium 19mm black alligator-grain leather strap. No box or paperwork.
